Editorial Review:

Product Description:
As the historic festival marks its 40-year anniversary, Rhino presents WOODSTOCK-40 YEARS ON: BACK TO YASGUR'S FARM, a 77-song, six-CD boxed set that features the most comprehensive collection ever available of artists that performed at the original festival, sequenced in chronological order of performance, featuring 38 previously unreleased recordings, including the Grateful Dead, The Who, Tim Hardin, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & The Fish, and others.
To assemble the most comprehensive document of the myth-steeped weekend, the boxed set's co-producer Andy Zax pored over every inch of multitrack tape in search of the strongest parts of each of the 33 sets. 'The way we approached all of the material was as if it was a cinema verite documentary-the raw record of the event,' Zax says. In addition to the music, the set offers considerable amount of ancillary material sprinkled throughout the discs-stage announcements, lysergic babble, the sounds of rain, a cameo appearance by Abbie Hoffman, and the graciousness of Max Yasgur's address to the crowd, heard for the first time in its entirety.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - LIKED THE CD SET
I LIKED THE CD SET AND RECENTLY VISITED THE WOODSTOCK MUSEUM .IT MADE ME WISH I HAD BEEN THERE. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE. THIS KIND OF EVENT WILL PROBABLY NEVER BE POSSIBLE TO DUPLICATE.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - ALVIN LEE & Ten Years After: MIA
Having just spent a week of car rides to work and back listening to the 6-disc set, it was OK. I would take the 2-CD set over this any day. Less is more. Maybe if they had included 6 sides of Havens, Who, CSN (&Y), Santana, Cocker, it would have been worth it but I think I've come away knowing I am not a Country Joe fan. There are some more obscure artists (Quill, anyone?) to me, and that's ok from a history of music. Others like Tim Harden, extra Joan Baez are nice to hear because they made an ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What I Do
Usually when I get huge box sets like Woodstock etc, what I do is I'll listen to it once and then I'll most likely make a selection of the best songs on there. And then I'll delete the rest from my iTunes but I'll occasionally bring them back. Here's what I have on my playlist. Hope you like it.

Disc 1.
Richie Havens: Freedom - It's what he was seeing around him. And it was totally improvised.
Bert Sommer: And When It's Over - What a fantastic voice!
Joan Baez: Sweet ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Fun Collection
I purchased this box set for my girlfriend as a Christmas present and she really likes it. She's much younger than an actual Woodstock attendee, but an avid fan of music of the times. She appreciated having some of the songs that are hard to come by and the live Woodstock versions available as well. She is a big fan of the set. It's nice to get so much variety in one collection.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Cream of the Crop
I'm pleasantly surprised yet not fully satisfied with this release. The sound quality and editing is much better than the original soundtrack or "25th Anniversary" editions. I realize that it can't contain everthing without making it significantly larger and more expensive, but there are a few cuts from both editions that I miss (like the rain chant and a few other announcements in the original soundtrack and several great tracks included on the 25th anniv edition that were not included). I do feel ... Read More
